When the pears are ready to be picked?

Only recently moved to a house that has lots of fruit trees. There is a tree pear is paying off. The pears are becoming big … I do not know exactly when to be picked. Must be tough when you pick them up, then allowed to mature on the inside? Should be of a certain color? Or … Is there something else I should be looking for?

Pick them when they are still strong to touch and look about the right size. Bring them inside and place in a dark closet, fresh and mature in a few days and wonderful flavor. I've also heard wrapping them in newspaper and then placed in a cool cupboard. Wash it first and keep an eye out for fruit flies can also enjoy the pears.
